Yep, there was a time when I disliked avocado immensely. Weird, mushy, avocado. Can you believe it? Thankfully the times have changed – I can’t get enough of it these days and could happily have it at least once a day on toast. Ahhh nature’s butter. While my favourite is probably on toast with chilli, it is also the perfect side to pretty much every dish ever.
This recipe is a tweaked version of one I posted about three years ago, back when I was living/travelling in a van and my photography was embarrassing. So today I bring to you an updated recipe with a little more stylish photos. Avo is still the main player in this dish, though it is hidden by cacao to bring you a rich and creamy dessert. It is quite thick, and I have seen some people do a similar thing but blend a banana into it or extra coconut cream which I suppose would create a lighter texture, I’m yet to try it though.
Raw Chocolate Avocado Mousse
(serves 2-3)
2 avocados
1/2 cup cacao
1/4 cup coconut cream
4 Tbsp maple syrup or other sweetener
1 Tbsp coconut oil, liquified
1 tsp vanilla
Pinch of salt
Blend all ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Taste for sweetness and add more sweetener if desired, though keep in mind that the taste does settle overnight – I find the avocado flavour mellows completely with some time. Pour into serving glasses and chill in the fridge over night. Top with desired toppings e.g. berries, coconut, cacao nibs, choc chips, banana.
It looks like such an elegant dessert in those glasses! I still remember the first time I had an avocado at the ripe old age of 22. I loved it from the start, and was baffled as to how I hadn’t even really known it existed for most of my life!
Thanks Jenny! Nothing like a cocktail glass to bring the fancy. Wow, crazy to think you didn’t try an avo for so long – are they hard to come by for you?
Not hard to come by, I think they were just a bit exotic! I only really had one vegetarian cookbook, and I don’t think avocados featured much in it. I wouldn’t have known what to do with one. This was 10 years ago, I don’t think they were quite so well-known then, certainly not in my little town!
I have tried avocado mouse and remember it being rather thick so the addition of coconut cream seems like something I would like to try – and if I had fancy cocktail glasses like these I would try that too
I remember the first time I tried avocado and I thought it was really weird and greasy, and definitely wasn’t a fan. I’m much more convinced of their glories now – who doesn’t love something that you can put it a mousse and in a sandwich!?
Yum! The recipe for Avocado Chocolate Mousse that I have used has a banana in it, but you can taste it. Nothing wrong with that, but for a purer chocolate flavour I think I’ll try this next time. Thank you 🙂
I love avocado, and always have, but I don’t like the idea of avocado as a dessert. It’s purely a psychological block because I’ll happily eat an avocado dessert — just don’t like making one. I remember when a friend made me avocado ice cream, and it was fantastic, but I had trouble convincing myself to make it. Go figure. Your pudding looks great.
I love avocado, though I am little hesitant about it in desserts. I’ve had some great ones, but I have also had some that were just not pleasant. Which made me sad because avocado is so great in general. I have recently come around to using it in smoothies, though, so perhaps desserts aren’t too far behind. Avocados are life!
