Music for your Mouth: Agent Orange/Orange Juice

Another double shot of tunes today with Agent Orange – a punky, surfy band from the late ’70s, and Orange Juice – a post-punk, Scottish band. It’s kind of strange to present to you a salad in association with a band whose namesake is a herbicide used during the Vietnam War, but I assure you there are no crop destroying chemicals in this dish.

It’s another throw together simple salad which is great to take along to a barbecue or put on the Christmas table. I have no idea about pomegranates. I had my first taste of them only a couple of years ago – my mum served one with breakfast on a special occasion – maybe Christmas? I have had one since then, not including this one. So I had no idea what I was doing when I was trying to select a ripe one, nor get the seeds out. What a strange strange fruit. I’ve been seeing them in so many recipes lately and I guess I just thought they would look pretty in a salad.

Orange, Avocado and Pomegranate Salad

3 cups salad leaves – I used a mix of baby spinach and rocket
1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
1/2 avocado, sliced
2 small navel oranges
1/3 cup pomegranate seeds

Dressing:
Juice of half an orange
1 tsp orange zest
Juice of half a lime
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp agave nectar
1 small garlic clove, minced
2 Tbsp coriander
Salt and pepper to taste

Cut your oranges into slices. It’s probably easier to slice them then cut the skin off – the first one I did I peeled first and then tried to slice it up – it was a juicy juicy mess.

Throw all salad ingredients in a bowl.

Put all dressing ingredients in a blender and blend to combine. Pour over salad.

Easy.

  1. I love pomegranates in a salad like that but on their own, nope. Can’t handle the seedy feeling on my teeth. I like them in smoothies though. I looked up YouTube vids on how to cut a pomegranate. Who would have thought there was a special technique?

    1. How funny, I’ve always loved biting seeds right between my front teeth! I will have to go look up these videos…my method is tear it apart with hands, let seeds fall out everywhere and/or get smooshed, collect seeds up from kitchen bench.

  2. I have a bunch of orange juice in the freezer. I need to try that dressing.

    1. Let me know what you think if you do – I said one small garlic clove because when I did mine I did a huge double clove and it was a bit burny – I think a small one would be fine.

Pomegranates have always confused me a little, but a while ago I found a little pack of the seeds. I am not convinced. I like the taste of the juicy bit, but then it is kind of just like eating seeds. I am not sure it would be worth the effort of actually opening up one properly and getting the seeds out. Though if I saw them in a box again I might grab them as I have a few recipes that call for them in my books.
What did you think of them? Worth the effort?

    1. They are quite confusing, aren’t they? They are also quite amazing the way the juicy little seeds just cluster in there. I guess for me it wasn’t a huge effort, though it was quite a mess with juice spurting around and seeds falling out. I don’t think they are something I am going to ever incorporate into my daily cooking/eating, but I do think they make a pretty salad for a special occasion.

  4. So beautiful! It’s so true that you coul take this to a barbecue or Christmas dinner!

  5. ooh I love orange juice – and love your salad – I got all excited about pomegranates when first first blogging – they look pretty but are a pain to get out and I just get lazy now and ignore them – but they look great here

    1. They ARE a pain. I don’t understand the fruit, and I don’t understand how there can be pomegranate juice. How many of those tiny damn seeds does it take to make a bottle of juice? Arghhh!
